![]() ![]() This change in the nature of the deviations always increases the total sum of squares. The reason is that the deviations that are squared and summed in Figure 3 are the differences between the values and zero, not between the values and their mean. They are both much larger than the sums of squares reported in Figure 2. Notice the values for the sum of squares regression and the sum of squares residual in Figure 3. Now examine the same sort of analysis shown in Figure 3.įigure 3 The deviations are centered on zero. It's all as is expected according to the mathematics underlying regression analysis. ![]() ![]() There's nothing magical about any of this. The square of that correlation, in cell H23, is 0.595-that is of course R 2, the same value that you get by calculating the ratio of the sum of squares regression to the total sum of squares. The former are calculated using Excel's matrix functions the latter are calculated using the LINEST function.Īlso notice in Figure 2 that the correlation between the actual and the predicted Y values is given in cell H22. Notice in Figure 2 that the statistics reported in G11:J15 are identical to those reported in G3:J7 (except that LINEST() reports the regression coefficients and their standard errors in the reverse of worksheet order). The result, 0.595, states that 59.5% of the variability in the Y values is attributable to variability in the composite of the X values. That is, R 2 is the ratio of the sum of squares regression to the total sum of squares of the Y values. One useful way to calculate that figure (and a useful way to think of it) is: The value in cell G13, 0.595, is the R 2 for the regression. The sums of squares are calculated by means of the DEVSQ() function, which subtracts every value in the argument's range from the mean of those values, squares the result, and sums the squares. They are based on the predicted Y values, in L21:L40, and the deviations of the predicted values from the actuals, in M21:LM40. In Figure 2, cells G15:H15 contain the sums of squares for the regression and the residual, respectively. Others, including myself, believe that if setting the constant to zero appears to be a useful and informative option, then linear regression itself is often the wrong model for the data.įigure 2 The deviations are centered on the means. Some credible practitioners believe that it's important to force the constant to zero in certain situations, usually in the context of regression discontinuity designs. It extends to the whole area of regression analysis, regardless of the platform used to carry out the regression. In fact, the question is not limited to LINEST() and Excel. And there is a real question of whether the const argument is a useful option at all. Setting the const argument to FALSE can easily have major implications for the nature of the results that LINEST() returns.
![]() ![]() Two authors (N.H., M.D.M.K.) independently screened the titles and abstracts, followed by a screening of the possibly relevant full-text articles. ![]() Studies were included that assessed diagnostic accuracy of upper cervical instability screening tests in patients or people who were healthy and in which sensitivity and specificity were reported or could be calculated using a 2 × 2 table. Search terms were related to the diagnostic parameters, SMT, and upper cervical spine instability tests (for details, see Appendix 1). Two authors (N.H., M.D.M.K.) independently performed the search. Searches were made in PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and RECAL Legacy databases from their date of inception until the end of October 2012 using MeSH terms (PubMed), thesaurus (EMBASE, CINAHL), and free-text words. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy in terms of sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and likelihood ratios of the upper cervical spine instability screening tests in patients or people who are healthy. Little is known about the diagnostic accuracy of the upper cervical spine instability tests, and to our knowledge no systematic reviews are available on this topic. For example, 34.3% of the members of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia rarely performed instability screening, 23% never performed instability screening, and 12.3% performed screening tests prior to upper cervical spine manipulative therapy (SMT). 12 However, these tests are useful only if the reliability and validity are deemed sufficient.Īpparently, there is no consensus regarding the use of upper cervical instability testing among practitioners. 3 In clinical practice, the Sharp-Purser test (SPT), side-bending test, passive upper cervical flexion test, and lateral stability test are commonly used for assessment of upper cervical spine instability. Several clinical screening tests are considered able to detect hypermobility and instability of the craniocervical ligaments. According to the guidelines for cervical manual therapy intervention, to minimize the risk of complications, it is recommended to screen patients for upper cervical instability, 5, 7– 11 especially in those at high risk for complications. 5, 6 However, when suspected of having cervical instability, these patients should be referred back to the clinician instead of receiving any treatment. In clinical practice, neck pain, headache, and limited cervical mobility are common reasons to apply cervical manual therapy (physical therapy) interventions. 2 Symptoms of upper cervical spine instability are variable, and reported consequences of instability include neck pain, limited mobility, torticollis, and neurological symptoms. 2, 3 Trauma and congenital deviation (eg, Down syndrome) also can cause upper cervical spine instability. 1 Upper cervical spine instability is associated with inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. 1 For patients seeking chiropractic care, a prevalence rate of 0.6% was reported. The prevalence of upper cervical spine instability varies among different types of patients. ![]() ![]() ![]() The wrong example sounds decent, initially. According to Mark Singleton, it focuses on “health, fitness, and wellbeing” and ignores “the subtle system of hatha yoga.” Modern hatha yoga is heavily focused on asana or physical postures. “When we get where we’re going, we’ll never be sick, we won’t get any older, and we won’t ever die.”ĭavid’s response to this in the film is, “you’re joking me, right?” Modern Yoga It is the same sentiment Wilford Brimley’s character Ben expresses in the movie Cocoon. Through yoga, you could change “ the human body into a vessel immune from mortal decay”. They saw yoga practices as a way to prepare or “bake” the body, as you would a clay pot.Ī second agenda was alchemy and transmutation or changing one thing into another. Hatha yoga came along to treat your body as a temple, which is why they offer “body-centric” yoga. Rod Stryker says that you can think about asana as a way to “dissolve or breakdown the resistance to energetic flow.” Baking and Alchemyīefore the advent of hatha yoga, yogins thought very little of having a body, equating it with a dump. That’s not a foreign way of thinking to us, as we still use terms like stuck, blocked, or plateau. Eastern practices imagine we have blockages that we need to remove before they can cause disease. The most significant problem you can have, in the Indian mind, is when things get stuck. Like many Eastern practices, such as acupuncture, the goal is to keep the energy of the body flowing. Hatha yoga seeks to bring harmony to the two sides of the body, thought of as two separate channels– the Ida and Pingala. Balance of the mental and physical energies.kundalini awakenings could lead to “mental anguish.” ( Feuerstein)īesides the metaphoric serpent smacking, the goals of traditional hatha yoga are: ![]() Through yoga, you could wake up or strike the snake with your force, and that would cause it to stand up and move through your chakras–said like “chuck” not “chalk,” that lie along your central channel, the Sushumna Nadi. We are not in the 15th century anymore, and our knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and other sciences has grown.Īt this time, the hatha yogins imagined a coiled serpent at the base of your spine called the kundalini. Therefore it is a text to illuminate and describe what hatha yoga is about.Īs your guide, my goal is to explain how the theory works, not to agree with the point-of-view. Hatha Yoga Pradipika translates to Light on Hatha Yoga. Together, with the Gheranda Samhita and Siva Samhita, they comprise the corpus of hatha yoga. Hatha yoga was born around the 13th century with it’s most famous text, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, written by Swami Swatmarama, appearing 2 centuries later. This is the tale of two hathas, one dating back to around the 13th century and the modern, twenty-first-century method, which is nothing like it. Theos Bernard concurred, back in 1947, but says in a footnote: “The traditional meaning of the word hatha is force, hence this form of Yoga is sometimes called forceful Yoga.” Modern Hatha and Traditional Hatha Yoga Some scholars, notably Eliade say hatha can also mean sun and moon. Hatha refers to the practices of the body, so we typically think of yoga postures being hatha, but so too are breathing, eating, and others. It gets a little more poetic, though, as you’ll see. Think of “force” as what you generate with your efforts, like powering an old school flashlight with a hand crank. I know this can be shocking, especially if you know yoga to be about peace, love, and understanding. The literal meaning of hatha is “ force” or “forceful.” It also means to strike a blow. You pronounce hatha, like “ hot ta,” where the “a” rhymes with la, ma, and pa and it has a hard “t,” not like “hath tha,” as in “bath” and “math.” Not all yoga is hatha yoga, but all physical yoga is hatha.īut, and here’s where the problem comes up, in modern yoga, we tend to treat hatha yoga like it’s own separate practice. What’s the difference between cars and red cars, or the difference between fruit and oranges.
